Adrian Gordon is a composer, conductor, author, performer and music educator based in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he serves as Director of Orchestras at Providence Day School. For more than 20 years, his work has centered on a simple idea: music written for students can tell real, sometimes emotional stories, and every young musician deserves to play music that moves them.
Adrian’s music for string orchestra is published by Alfred Music and by Leap Year Music Publishing, the company he founded, and appears on state performance lists in California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina and Texas. His work A Touch of Humanity was commissioned by the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music during his 2025 composer residency at the Eastman School of Music. He has also been a featured resident composer at the NYSSMA Winter Conference.
As a guest conductor and clinician, Adrian has led honor orchestras, clinics and residencies in 16 states, including all-state orchestras in California, Georgia and South Carolina, The Midwest Clinic, the ASTA National Conference, and the Washington Music Educators Association Conference. He serves as a Member at Large on the American String Teachers Association Board of Directors.
Adrian is the author of Note to Self, a book for music teachers navigating every stage of their careers, from the first job search to building a program of their own. His writing has appeared in School Band & Orchestra and North Carolina Music Educator, and he is a frequent guest on music education podcasts. He also performs as a violinist with the Charlotte Strings Collective, which celebrates the music of Black composers.
Adrian holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Miami and a Master of Science in Music Education from Florida International University.
